19 Naperville-area schools rank in top 10% in Illinois, new state report card says

Thirteen of Naperville District 203 schools and six schools in Indian Prairie District 204 are ranked among the top 10 percent in the state under Illinois’ new school rating system.

The Illinois State Board of Education Tuesday released the 2018 Illinois Report Card, which relies more on how students perform on standardized tests improves from year to year than on if students meet or fail to meet a designated benchmark.

Under the new system, schools can fall into one of four categories: exemplary, commendable, underperforming and lowest performing.

The change is seen as a way to give low-performing school credits if they can show their students are improving, even if their scores remain below average. As such, student growth resulted in 80 percent of schools being rated either commendable or exemplary.

The exemplary designation is given to schools with academic performance in the top 10 percent statewide. To be exemplary, none of a school’s student subgroups, including racial and ethnic groups, students from low-income families and those with special needs, can be low-performing.

In Illinois, 67 high schools, 47 middle schools and 257 elementary schools made the top 10 percent. In DuPage County, seven high schools, three middle school and 41 elementary schools made the cut as exemplary schools.

In District 203, both high schools, Naperville Central and Naperville North, earned exemplary status. Only one junior high school, Kennedy Junior High in Lisle, received the designation.

The 10 District 203 elementary schools in Naperville listed as exemplary are Ellsworth, Elmwood, Highlands, Maplebrook, Meadow Glens, Mill Street, Ranch View, River Woods, Scott and Steeple Run.

The remaining eight District 203 schools were deemed commendable, which means the school had no underperforming student demographic groups but did not meet the cap for the top 10 percent of schools statewide.

In a message to District 203 families, Superintendent Dan Bridges said he was proud all 21 District 203 elementary, junior high and high schools received the designation of either commendable or exemplary.

“Again, we are very proud of the work our students and staff put forth toward our mission of becoming self-directed learners, collaborative workers, complex thinkers, quality producers and community contributors,” Bridges said in an email message.

In Indian Prairie School District 204, two high schools and four elementary schools earned exemplary status.

Neuqua Valley High School in Naperville and Metea Valley High School in Aurora cracked the top 10 percent in the state along with Brooks Elementary School in Aurora and Fry, Peterson and Spring Brook elementary schools in Naperville.

Waubonsie Valley, the third Indian Prairie high school, seven middle schools and 17 elementary schools earned commendable status.

No school in DuPage County was listed in the lowest performing category, although nine DuPage schools on the northern and eastern sides of the county were deemed underperforming.
